The children use the following websites to support their reading and writing.
We follow the Read, Write Inc. phonics programme throughout EYFS & KS1. This is used to support children higher up the school when necessary.
Children are encouraged to choose books from the wide selection available, which broadly follows the Big Cat Book Band Colour Scheme. To support this, children across the school are paired up with a younger or older ‘buddy’ who reads with them at least once per week.
Take a look at these videos of an example of how you can read with your child in each year group.
Reading looks like...
Holton uses Read Write Inc to teach phonics and early writing. Key Stage 1 children use Big Cat reading scheme to learn to read.
Oracy
Oracy, encompassing the ability to articulate, engage in discussions, and present ideas effectively, is a crucial focus in primary schools because it underpins so much of a child's holistic development. By fostering strong spoken language skills, we empower children to express their thoughts and feelings clearly, participate actively in collaborative learning, and develop critical thinking through reasoned argument. This not only enhances their academic progress across all subjects but also builds confidence, improves social interactions, and lays a vital foundation for future learning and success in an increasingly communicative world.
The Masked Reader
As part of World Book Day, Holton St Peter Primary School hosts "The Masked Reader." The teachers hide their faces and sometimes change their voices and read a section of a book. It's up to the children to work who is behind the mask!
